Saturdays on the town with Grandpa

I had the great fortune to grow up living next door to Grandpa and Grandma. In gradeschool I'd frequently accompany Grandpa on a trip into town. These would involve stops by the bank, the post office, etc. The highlight however was breakfast at the Country Kitchen. Silver dollar pancakes were the reward for suffering through the other boring grownup business of the day. One of the things about these outings and any social event with Grandpa was the absurd number of people that recognized him and were glad to have a few minutes to say hello. There were always several people at the restaurant, people along the sidewalk, anywhere you went who he'd stop to chat with. No walk down the sidewalk was complete without at least one "Hey Joe!" from someone across the street anxious to say hi and see how Grandpa was doing. These were people he'd coached in high school. Or old family friends from years ago. Or neighbors for whose kids he'd written college letters of recommendation. Folks from the VFW or the Moose lodge. As a kid it was frustrating to have to endure these delays. Looking back now I'm amazed at the number of people whose lives he touched.
