A '50's childhood memory

In the mid-1950's, I was 6 to 8 years old. Every summer, I would spend two weeks in Geneve visiting Nona & family. We were sitting on Nona's front porch one summer day when Uncle Joe came up the front steps in his Navy dress whites. He stopped to say hello before going to his Naval Reserve meeting in Cleveland. He sure looked sharp in that uniform! Sitting next to me, a conversation ensued. I cannot remember the circumstances that lead to the following statement, but it had a profound impact on me throughout my entire life. He looked at me with a fatherly kindness & said "Marc, you must decide whether you want to be a follower or a leader in your life." My life has been guided by this statement in many obvious as well as subtle ways. Knowing that Uncle Joe was an athlete, being a team player was essential to success. So how many leaders can there be? Well, as I got older, I realized that the meaning of that statement was knowing when to be a "team player" & when to be a "leader". In other words, making the best call one could & being prepared to accept the consequences for that choice. I will always love him for that advice on that very impressionable moment & day in my life.
