All Are Welcome

“All ARE WELCOME” It occurred to me as I read Judge Mallone’s obituary and listened to his eulogy that he and Alice truly lived the christen value “all are welcome”. I’m in awe of how Judge Mallone and his wife Alice provided care for juveniles at the Juvenile Detention Home and how they welcomed two AfS students into their home. That kindness and welcoming generosity was also felt by my husband and I when on September 29th, 1979, Judge Mallone and Alice opened the doors of their home to our friends and family hosting our wedding reception. Again, “all are welcome”. My father, Joe Cook, often remarked to me “Joe Mallone is a good man”. I know they had shared conversations about the war (my father also served in WWII). There was one story however that I remember that wasn’t about the war but about Judge Mallone’s integrity and perhaps his subtle humor. One Sunday afternoon Dad took us to an ice cream store on Main Street for an ice cream cone. Dad waited in the car in front of the store. A police officer came along and told my Dad he had to move as he could not park in front of the store. My Dad explained that he wasn’t parked; he was just waiting for his children to come out. Dad explained to the officer that he did not want us to be frightened and he would be leaving the spot quickly. The officer issued my Dad a ticket. Dad appeared in front of Judge Mallone. Judge Mallone asked the officer why he had given my Dad the ticket. The officer responded that he issued the ticket mostly because my Dad had a “smug look” on his face. Judge Mallone responded to the officer, “How do you know that Mr. Cook wasn’t born with a smug look on his face”. The case was dismissed. I have been blessed to have known Judge Mallone and to have his family in my life. I have been very fortunate to have stayed with Joe’s daughter Cathy, her husband Dan, and daughter Emily at their home on numerous occasions. They continue the “all are welcome” value. We should all be so fortunate to have a legacy that Judge Mallone has left. He will be missed by many. Susan(Cook)LeSage
